CBS Launches “CBS News Confirmed” Unit to Tackle Misinformation and Deepfakes

CBS News is taking a proactive stance against misinformation and the proliferation of "deepfake" content with the launch of a dedicated unit called "CBS News Confirmed." This unit will focus on investigating and debunking false information and deepfake videos, which are often generated using artificial intelligence technology.

The initiative will be led by Claudia Milne, Senior Vice President for CBS News and Stations and Head of Standards and Practices, along with Ross Dagan, Executive Vice President and Head of News Operations and Transformation for CBS News and Stations.

Wendy McMahon, CEO of CBS' news, stations, and media ventures operations, emphasized the need to address the challenges posed by rapidly evolving technology. She noted that the rise of generative AI, deepfakes, and misinformation required a proactive response to maintain journalistic integrity.

The primary goal of the new unit is to produce segments that inform the audience about the veracity of information and how it was determined to be false or inaccurate. By providing insights into the methods used to confirm or debunk content, CBS aims to empower viewers to discern reliable information from deceptive or manipulated content.

A July 2023 research note from the Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs highlighted the growing concern surrounding content generated through AI. It emphasized that the rapid adoption of AI-generated content had significant implications for national security, cybersecurity, surveillance, and transparency, raising ethical questions in the process.

To combat these challenges, CBS plans to hire forensic journalists, enhance training programs, and invest in new technology. Ideal candidates will possess expertise in areas such as AI, data journalism, data visualization, multi-platform fact-checking, and forensic skills.
